Zack Space has joined Charlie Wilson in cosponsoring the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act.

“While it is great that companies are standing up to recall their defective products, it is simply unacceptable that these toys ended up in the hands of children in the first place. Something is wrong with a system when we have to wait for people to get sick or exposed to toxic chemicals before anything is done.”

“We cannot expect our parents to conduct the testing necessary to verify the safety of the products located on the shelves.  That is why we have safety standards and enforcement.  It is clear that system is broken, and we must take steps to protect our families.”

– Rep. Zack Space

According to the press release the act will:

  • Ban lead from children’s products and paint.
  • Require mandatory testing of children’s products by independent third-party labs.
  • Enhance the recall authority of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, to ensure that consumers learn about recalls more effectively and more quickly.
  • Provide the Consumer Product Safety Commission with significantly greater resources to protect America’s consumers, including improved testing and research facilities.
  • Ban unsafe and untested imported children’s products.
