More Comedy From The ORP Blog
The laughs never end over at the Ohio Republican Party’s “State of the Union” blog. They have a post up right now titled “Obama insults small town Americans” In the post they criticize Barack Obama for the following quote.
And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
You know what? That’s pretty damning stuff. But hold up, a little later I found a Politico article with the quote in context.
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
You know what? I reluctantly have to agree with him. I come from small town America, actually I live in a county that doesn’t even have a town. Our largest population center is classified as a village. I believe he makes a valid point, as much as I hate to admit it.
Nice try ORP, but I’m not buying it. You’ve flunked the integrity test and that’s why your candidates are getting the boot.

David,
While we are on distinct opposite sides of the fence, a few of us are extremely tired of the ORP and its big city politics, and have started a boycott called “Not One Red Cent!”
Please check it out and pass it on. It may serve as fodder for your friends; but getting the word out as best we can hopefully will send a message to the Cleveland Cabal.

It was a stupid thing to say. I dont know how he meant it - but it looks bad. These candidates say so much, they are bound to say something dumb. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Brian:
You’re right, we are opposites. I see nothing wrong with the ORP, they don’t need to change anything. They just need to keep doing everything exactly the same. Perhaps they should even bring back Taft and Blackwell.
I’ve read about the site on your blog and even give it a quick glance, but haven’t had enough time to do much more than that yet.
Ben:
It does seem rather blunt but when you look at the full context (I think someone at BSB found an even larger quote) it’s much less harsh.

I saw this report on NBC this morning, along with Clinton’s response and McCain’s response and then Obama’s response to McCain (he’s largely ignoring Clinton these days).
Seems like everyone is responding to sound bites and sound bites about sound bites. And everyone wants people to believe they are in touch and everyone else is out of touch.
Sen. Obama’s words (in the sound bite) come off as anti-faith, anti-gun. Some folks will be upset about that, but in the end, it really doesn’t change much. Bottom line is to look at the candidates position on the issues and see how they line up.
As the bard said “much ado about nothing”.

David;
If we leave the ORP alone, then they will continue taking the state down road to socialism. While that might be fine for some, I choose freedom.

But you have to understand, some of us like having an incompetent Republican Party. It makes elections so much simpler.

While I don’t live in Ohio, I always like it best when there are competent candidates in both parties. I think it builds a stronger country (or state).
