Congressman Zack Space’s re-election chances are looking pretty good. I know we’ve heard this story before, but Space is really good at fundraising. His campaign has pulled in $360,088, giving them almost a million dollars on hand.

“I’m extraordinarily thankful for the support I’ve received. Our effort to listen and respond to the needs of the people of 18th’s Congressional District continues to resonate.

“We have a long way to go in what is going to be a very tough race, but having nearly one million in the bank puts our campaign in a good position.”

– Rep. Zack Space

I haven’t heard anything about the Republican’s finances, but that pretty much says it all right there.

Washed out congressional candidate Jeanette Moll took a moment to post a thank you note to her supporters on her campaign site earlier today. I think the gesture would have been much more heartfelt, however, if the note hadn’t degenerated into what is essentially an ad for Moll’s legal firm.

Now, I am continuing my involvement to seek to make this area of Ohio a better place to live, do business and raise a family. Recently, I was named Vice President of the Board of Directors for Triple Cross Acres. This new Christian ministry will serve at risk youth and physically challenged children through the use of horses. My husband and I are also working with local organizations to bring a Miracle League baseball field to our community.

Professionally, my firm, Jeanette M. Moll LLC, is looking to expand the services we provide to our fellow residents of Southeastern Ohio.

I have mediated pending cases for 11 years. At the Guernsey County Court of Common Pleas, I mediated all types of civil cases, as well as both domestic relations and juvenile cases. I welcome the opportunity to assist in the negotiation and resolution of these cases.

Additionally, my associate, Barb Caffaratti, and I offer legal representation for family, juvenile, and general legal matters. Jeanette M. Moll LLC is located at 803B Market Street, Zanesville, Ohio 43701. You can also contact me at [email removed because even Jeanette Moll doesn't deserve spam].

Candidate Zack Space has released a statement (included below) on his overwhelming primary victory today.

The big story today though, is that we finally know who he’ll be running against. It looks like it’s going to be Fred Dailey. It’s definitely not who I would have thought, but I’ll have more on it in the coming days.

Unless we greatly diminish the influence of special interests, we cannot reorder the horrible priorities of past years that have cheated our veterans of the health care they deserve, undercut the efforts of senior citizens to get the health care they deserve, and robbed our students of their ability to get an affordable education without mortgaging their future. And we must make sure that we have tough immigration policies that do not undercut American workers’ efforts to get jobs.

These policies have not only taken our workers’ jobs away – they have compromised families’ health care, they have led to a traumatic home mortgage crisis, and, as I’ve seen time and time again sadly, they have deprived these families of the absolute basic necessities such as food.”

A nation’s budget is a blueprint of our priorities, and that’s why we must invest more heavily in our towns and communities, our infrastructure, and our people. We must prepare our children for the future that lies before them, and we must work with every fiber of our being to bring in new industries and new jobs because nothing changes the fabric of a community like the promise that comes with new opportunities.”

When my office receives word of any company even contemplating a move to Ohio, we spring into action, working tirelessly to bring that plant to our communities. I’ve also begun my RENEW OHIO-18 to look, longer-term, at how our region must be prepared to benefit from the new technologies of tomorrow, such as broadband or alternative energy.”

There’s an article in the Zanesville Times Recorder that starts out:

Is U.S. Rep. Zack Space facing a tough race for re-election? Top leaders of the state Democratic and Republican parties weren’t so sure Thursday.

At a seminar hosted by The Associated Press, State Reps. Chris Redfern and Kevin DeWine were asked to list the most competitive congressional races in Ohio. Redfern, the state Democratic Party chairman, and DeWine, the GOP’s deputy chairman, listed four races in the Canton, Columbus and Cincinnati areas.

Space’s 18th District, which includes Muskingum and Coshocton counties, wasn’t on their list.

While it would be foolish to breathe a sigh of relief just yet, this news really doesn’t surprise me. The Republican Party has been short of cash recently and been forced to play defense in districts that they one had a firm hold on.

GOP co-chairman Kevin DeWine does say that:

“We haven’t taken it off the table. We have three fine folks who are running. We also know Zack has a significant financial advantage. We have to see what the race looks like once we get through the primary.”

Translation: We want to try to take this district but we don’t have the resources or a strong candidate yet.

Jeanette Moll is continuing her campaign to avoid dealing with the issues confronting the 18th district. This time around she’s filed a brief (probably unsolicited) in the Columbia v. Heller gun control case that’s pending before the Supreme Court.

Even more disturbing, here statement on the brief included the following line:

“The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental God-given right. It’s our duty as Americans to ensure such rights are not infringed upon,”

Wait, what? A “God-given right”? Frankly, I doubt God cares one way or the other about us having guns I’ve also got to ask what’s with Moll continually trying to inject herself into national cases that have absolutely nothing to do with her? It’s pathetic.

Republican Fred Dailey, the former state agriculture director, had less than $51,000 on hand as of Dec. 31, according to the end of the year report he has filed with the Federal Elections Commission. But he also had loaned his campaign committee $30,000, according to the report.

Republican Jeanette Moll, meanwhile, had just over $43,000 on hand as of the end of the year, with a $10,000 campaign committee debt. The third main GOP contender in the 18th, Paul Phillips, had not yet filed his report this afternoon with the FEC, with the deadline midnight tonight. But as of Oct. 31, Phillips had less than $31,000 in his campaign coffers.

And Space? As of Dec. 31 he had nearly $756,000 in his campaign chest.

So basically, Space’s campaign has about $700,000 more cash on hand than their nearest competitor.

Well that’s at least what appears to be going on. Instead of discussing issues concerning Southeastern Ohioans, 18th district candidate Jeanette Moll has decided to weigh in on the Larry Craig sex scandal. Yes, that’s right. Jeanette Moll skips over things like the economy and the war to attack the ACLU’s decision to file a brief in defense of Larry Craig.

Even more perplexing is Moll’s belief that any member of the board of directors for the Ohio Chapter of the ACLU who doesn’t condemn the brief should step down. If that’s the way things are done, then I’d like to issue a challenge to to her: Condemn all the recent scandals involving Republicans or abandon your run for Congress. Is that reasonable? Probably not, but apparently we’ve thrown reason out the window.

Just as I was about to click publish I noticed Plunderbund beat me to the punch. If you don’t buy into my reasoning that this is out of her area of jurisdiction go over there to see why this is still ridiculous.

Incumbent Zack Space of the 18th congressional district has launched a new fundraising program entitled “I Back Zack” to help raise funds for the coming election.

Basically the program requires a person to pledge to pay an $8 donation each month for ten months (until election day) and in exchange the first 100 participants will get a T-shirt and an invite to a private reception. Not too bad for $80, especially when it goes to such a good cause.

If you’re interested, you can read the fundraising announcement after the jump.

Dear David,

I have the opportunity to serve the people of southeastern Ohio because my predecessor, who is now in jail, became the poster boy for the corruption and scandal that riddled the Republican Party. He betrayed the trust of so many people and damaged our democracy.

In order to restore that trust, I have made it my mission to curb the influence that lobbyists have in Washington. That is why:

I led the charge to change the rules of the House of Representatives so that no Member of Congress can accept travel, gifts, or meals from lobbyists.

I refuse to accept campaign contributions from lobbyists.

But, as we all know, change never comes easily. My opponents and their entrenched special interest backers are doing everything they can to hold on to power and maintain the status quo in Washington. They will spare no expense in that effort. In fact, they’ve already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to drag my name through the mud.

While my opponents rely on the backing of big money lobbyists, I am relying on you. If enough ordinary people band together, we can bring about meaningful change.

That is why I am announcing the “I Back Zack: $8 for Victory in ‘08” campaign and asking you to join me in the fight break the lobbyists’ grip on Washington.

Here’s how it works. We are asking contributors to sign up to donate $8 each month until the election. Our goal for the whole campaign is to get 1000 people to join. But for now, we need 100 people to sign up before the primary on March 4. The first 100 people to sign up will get an “I Back Zack” t-shirt and an invitation to a private “I Back Zack” reception. Please join now. I really need your help.

Signing up is easy. All you have to do is:

Click “I Back Zack”

Under “I would like to contribute” select “other” and type in “$8.00”

Under “I would like to make this contribution” select “each month” and type “10” in the box asking how many months you’d like to contribute.

Fill in your credit card information.

Over the course of the campaign, your $8/month contribution will go a long way towards bringing about change and breaking the lobbyists’ grip on Washington.
Thank you for your consideration. Together we will continue to move our country in a better direction.

All the best,

Zack Space

We knew this was going to be a hugely contested House seat going into 2008. When the dust cleared after Friday’s filing deadline, Republicans Jeanette Moll, 42, of Zanesville; Beau Bromberg, 38, of Newark; Fred Dailey, 62, of Mount Vernon; and Paul Phillips, 44, of Chillicothe all filed their petitions, putting them in a 5-way race for the 18th district. The Democratic challenger is Mark Pitrone, 53, of Gnadenhutten.

From the Newark Advocate:

All four Republican candidates bring impressive credentials, Spain said. Dailey was the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture for 16 years in the Voinovich and Taft administrations, and Phillips was a lieutenant colonel after 20 years in the Air Force. Moll is a former magistrate for the Guernsey County Court of Common Pleas, and Bromberg is a Newark business manager.

It’s gonna be flying from all sides to get this seat back to Republicans. But as Zack has said, it doesn’t belong to them. It belongs to the people.
